Multiple Teams · Middies claim fourth at GMC track and field championships

MASON — More than a decade ago Middletown graduate and track and field phenom Jeff See established the Greater Miami Conference record in the 1600 meter run.

On Friday afternoon See’s mark finally fell to Lakota East’s Dustin Horter. Horter ran a blistering 4:07.52 and eclipsed See’s standard by nearly four seconds while earning him 2017 GMC Runner of the Year honors.

Horter’s main competition during the cross country and track seasons this school year has been Middie sophomore distance specialist Conant Smith.

Smith continues to press Horter, and once again he turned in an impressive time enroute to a second place finish at 4:18.97.

Smith also followed Horter in the 800 as Horter won with a time of 1:54.56.

Mason claimed the boys team championship with 158 total points and Sycamore finished second at 153.

Lakota West finished in third-place with 85 points and Middletown rounded out the top-four with 57.

Two other Middies also claimed second-place finishes during field event competition on Wednesday adding to the Middletown effort.

Marquise Petty set a personal record in the long jump by leaping more than seven inches beyond his previous best with a jump of 22-0.25, and Shandon Morris elevated over the high jump bar at 6-2.
